Transportation for Washington Statement of Support for Mayor Bruce Harrell
Transportation for Washington commends Mayor’s leadership on the Seattle Transportation Levy and work to speed up delivery of Sound Transit
(Seattle, WA) —Transportation for Washington endorses Mayor Bruce Harrell in his re-election campaign for Mayor of Seattle.
Every day, hundreds of thousands of people take public transit in Seattle. That is why Transportation for Washington believes transit riders should be one of the most powerful voices in politics. We support candidates who champion critical transportation choices and can make progress on the biggest, most important challenges of our lifetime.
Mayor Harrell has demonstrated his commitment to getting Seattle’s transit riders moving. Under his leadership, the city shaped and passed the largest levy in Seattle history. The Seattle Transportation Levy will invest $1.55 billion over 8 years in our streets, trails and transit. This includes over $150 million in transit improvements, like bus lanes, bus stops, and sidewalks to transit and $9 million for transit safety. Mayor Harrell convened a diverse coalition to shape this vision, which won over 250,000 votes at the ballot last November.
“I am grateful for the support of partners like Transportation for Washington as we work to make light rail, bus, and pedestrian investments that move Seattle forward.” said Mayor Harrell. “My administration will continue making transit a first choice for more people by making it fast, frequent, and affordable”
Mayor Harrell’s administration has delivered on critical transportation projects in Seattle. The Rapid Ride G Line, the most frequent bus route in the county, launched under his leadership. Construction has begun on the Rapid Ride J line and the Route 40 improvements. Mayor Harrell has also helped make transit more affordable. His administration directed funds from the Seattle Transit Measure to put paid ORCA cards into the hands of 10,000 Seattle Housing Authority residents.
Seattle transit riders want to get Sound Transit’s light rail expansions done. Mayor Harrell has demonstrated his commitment to making this happen. Earlier this year, he signed an executive order committing the City to do its part to deliver light rail sooner.
While Seattle transit riders know our bus system can and should be even better, Mayor Harrell has proven he can deliver major wins on transit. Transportation for Washington commends Mayor Harrell’s leadership on delivering big transit projects. We are excited to work with him and his administration to make transit the best way for Seattleites to reach their work, school, healthcare, and every day needs.
